Buying (or being gifted) a piano: Important considerations

There are a few guidelines that we recommend following to help minimise the risk of purchasing a faulty piano. First, you must do your research and only purchase from reputable sellers. While it may be tempting to buy a piano from a private seller or online marketplace at a lower cost, there is a significant risk involved, and you may spend more money in the long run.

Secondly, it is crucial to have the piano inspected by a qualified technician before making any purchase. A pre-purchase piano inspection can help identify any underlying issues or potential problems that may arise in the future, and it will give you an accurate assessment of the piano's overall condition.

How much will your new instrument really cost you?

It is also essential to consider the costs of purchasing and maintaining a piano. While a "free" piano may seem like a good deal, the costs of moving, tuning, and repairing the instrument can add up quickly, and it may cost you more than a new or better-maintained piano in the long run.

As a team of experienced technicians, we have seen firsthand the consequences of purchasing a faulty piano, including the high costs of removing and disposing of the instrument. In many cases, these costs can well exceed $1000, a significant financial burden for any individual or family.

How to minimise the risks of purchasing a piano

To ensure that you invest in a high-quality instrument that will provide years of enjoyment, both seasoned musicians and beginners must research. Therefore, we strongly recommend seeking the advice of a qualified technician for a pre-purchase piano inspection before making any piano purchase.

If you have followed the guidelines below and are inspecting a piano, listen for notes that are significantly out of tune. This could indicate a severe problem with the pin block, making the piano irreparable. Play each note multiple times, and if the note does not repeat each time, sticking down or coming up slowly, there may be a costly problem that needs fixing.

Here are some guidelines to consider when purchasing a piano

Caution must be exercised when it comes to "free giveaways." More often than not, pianos given away for free are either in dire need of expensive repairs or are untunable and, therefore, worthless.

When considering the piano brand, it's safest to go for Kawai and Yamaha, preferably made in Japan. These brands are known for their durability and have a longer lifespan than pianos made elsewhere. It's best to purchase pianos made after 1980, with Kawai serial numbers over 1,000,000 and Yamaha serial numbers over 3,000,000. These pianos will last many years and have a high resale value if appropriately maintained.

Be aware of pianos made in China, as many of them have European-sounding names. Generally, these pianos have lower material quality and are not built to last as long as premium piano brands. They are also known for not holding tune as well as most Japanese or modern European pianos and have a lower resale value.

Play it safe and enjoy peace of mind with a quality pre-purchase piano inspection

If you're unsure about the quality of a piano you're considering, we offer a thorough and affordable piano inspection service at Advanced Musical Instrument Servicing. This inspection is similar to getting a report from the RACQ for a car you're interested in buying!

It's important to remember that moving a piano to your location can be significant and may exceed the cost of an inspection. With our inspection service, you can avoid being stuck with a costly and unreliable instrument.

Even well-known brands may have been mistreated or damaged over time. Additionally, many pianos have been negatively affected by recent weather events causing increased moisture and corrosion. These issues may not be immediately apparent, but they can quickly render a piano worthless in a year or two.

So don't take any chances - let us inspect any piano you're considering before purchasing. You can also ask about our pre-sale piano inspection to know if you have priced your instrument for sale correctly. Let our experts help you do things the right way!
