These cheaper instruments often use thinner metal that can be easily damaged, making it important to have them serviced annually to prevent deterioration.

For a better quality instrument that will last longer, purchasing a used instrument from a reputable maker like Bach, Conn, King, or Yamaha is recommended. Japanese-made instruments in particular, tend to be more durable and have better sound quality.

Woodwind instruments have more intricate parts like pads and corks that wear out over time. Pads typically last around 15 years, so buying an older instrument from a private seller may require re-padding, costing up to $500.
